A team of dogged firefighters rescued this lively young lady today – only to discover her name is Blaise!
But fortunately Blaise had only broken a window and not started a fire.
A crew from Acomb responded to reports of a dog trapped on the roof of a house on The Mount at 4.54pm today.
When they arrived they found that the dog had smashed the window on the second floor, scattering glass onto the pavement below.
Station Manager Steve Pickering told YorkMix: “We got reports of a dog trapped on a roof.
“It turns out that the dog was actually in the second floor bedroom, jumped up at the window, broke the glass, and the glass is falling outside.”
The crew cordoned off the pavement to ensure no one was hurt.
As the dog was on her own in the house, firefighter Ian Gallacher scaled a ladder and gained entry through the first floor window.
Station Manager Pickering said when they found the dog she was “absolutely fine”. Firefighter Gallacher was fine too – apart from some dog poo on his shoe!
Soon afterwards, owner Marcus Jacka arrived back.
“I got a missed call from my neighbour to say that the fire brigade have been called because there was a broken window and the dog was involved,” he said.
“I was just on Micklegate in this fantastic restaurant Brancusi, having lunch to celebrate friend’s 60th birthday, and I came back as soon as I could.
“You don’t expect such things – you’re walking up the street and you see the cordoned off stuff, the fire engine – and they were brilliant. They were fantastic guys.
“We – and the dog particularly – are very fortunate to have such people.”
Craftsman Marcus described Blaise, a five-year-old wirehaired pointer, as “a very spirited girl”. “It’s the first time that she’s invited the fire brigade to our house.
“I think she was missing us. We thought she’d be fine because normally it’s OK for a couple of hours but this time she managed to break the window.”
Marcus said he was very relieved that she was safe, “and she doesn’t seem to have suffered any long term injuries. So all is well in the end.”
