A City of York Council official has apologised to residents who will miss a recycling collection over Christmas after one of those affected voiced their frustration.
Residents who were set to get their recycling taken on Christmas Day, Friday, December 27 and Friday, January 3 will miss one collection.
Council environment lead James Gilchrist said the changes were due to bank holidays and to give staff time off, with extra recycling set to be taken in the following collections.
But Tadcaster Road resident Glen Sargant said he was extremely annoyed and disappointed he would have to wait four weeks during the busy festive period.
It comes after the council announced changes to its waste and recycling collections during the Christmas and New Year period.
The last recycling collections for those who would have had recycling collected on Christmas Day was on Wednesday, December 11 and they are set to resume on Wednesday, January 8.
Collections which would have taken place on Friday, December 27 and Friday, January 3 will see them resume on Friday, January 10 and Friday, January 17 respectively.
Households with collections falling on Boxing Day (Thursday, December 26), New Years Day (Wednesday, January 1) and Thursday, January 2 are set to get recycling taken the next day.
Collections on other days are set to take place as normal.
People with excess paper and cardboard should tear it up and place it flat in a cardboard box similar in size to their recycling bins, according to the council’s website.
Tadcaster Road resident Mr Sargant said he did not see why the council could not organise extra collections for those households who would have to miss one.
He said: “I am extremely annoyed and disappointed that this council cannot arrange for recycling to be collected over Christmas.
“It is the busiest time of the year for recycling, and with my extended family over for the festive period and many other guests, it is a joke that I have to wait four weeks for my next collection.”
Council environment, transport and planning director Mr Gilchrist said residents would still be able to take their waste to the Hazel Court and Towthorpe tips and to local bring banks.
The council official said: “Residents scheduled to have their recycling collections on Christmas Day, Friday, December 27 and Friday, January 3 will miss a single recycling collection.
“We apologise for this inconvenience, and crews will collect any extra recycling on the next scheduled collection.”
