Issued by City of York Council

City of York Council has launched a series of videos demonstrating the variety of sustainable travel options in the city and the benefits of walking, cycling and using public transport as part of the i-Travel York project.

In September i-Travel sourced a number of volunteers who commute to York based on the range of travel options that they used. They were then filmed going about their daily journey’s to work, which showed a variety of ways to travel, including walking, cycling, and public transport. The videos are now available to view on YouTube and the i-Travel York website.

The videos also tell the story of the individuals, including what motivates them, the health benefits they gain and how much time and money they save.

Cllr Dave Merrett, Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, said: “This is an exciting project using cutting edge technology and filming techniques to show people who live and/or work in York walking, cycling and using public transport for their daily commute.

“The vast majority of commuting journeys are up to five miles and are well within the range of walking for some and certainly cycling. Walking and cycling will not only help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution levels in the city but save you money and help get you fit.”

David Short, City of York Travel planning co-ordinator, said: “The aim of the video campaign is to demonstrate that there are realistic, sustainable alternatives to single occupancy car travel. Hopefully, the videos will inspire others to take up more sustainable travel options.”

The i-Travel York programme is funded from the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund, (LSTF), awarded to York in recognition of its commitment to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, reduce CO2 emissions and free up the roads to enable businesses to flourish.
