York City’s increasingly troubled season took another turn today with its second managerial sacking.
David Webb “has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect”, the club said in a brief statement.
It brings his tenure to an end just 69 days after he was given the job.
The club’s statement reads: “York City FC can confirm that first-team manager David Webb has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
“We would like to thank David for his efforts over the last few months and wish him all the best for the future.
“The club has commenced its search for a new manager, and we will bring further communication on who will take interim charge in due course.”
His departure comes after City lost 2-3 at home to Solihull Moors last night. It was the fourth straight league defeat in a row, and left the team in 18th place in the National League.
City are now only four points above Gateshead who are in the relegation zone – but have two games in hand on the Minstermen.
City’s previous manager John Askey, who oversaw their promotion to the National League, was sacked last November to the outrage of fans. At the time, City were 12th in the league.
It led to a huge backlash against club chairman Glen Henderson. Henderson had only joined York City last July, and axed Askey four months later.
Following the outcry, in December Henderson offered to sell his 51% share of the club back to the York City Supporters’ Trust, which owns 49%.
Shortly afterwards, he withdrew the offer. But the Trust insisted the offer was legally binding, and continued the process to find a new investor to buy Henderson’s shares. That deal needs to be done by 4 April.
Webb was appointed on 2 December. It was his first job as a manager, although he had backroom connections with a host of clubs.
Before he could take charge for his first game, he was rushed to hospital with Covid. While he was recovering, Webb’s assistant Michael Morton – who joined at the same time – was in charge on match days.
Webb’s managerial record reads: won 3; drew 2; lost 5.
There’s been no word yet on Morton’s future.
