Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, is celebrating the 190-year anniversary of Anne Lister and Ann Walker taking the sacrament together with a day of fun events.
It was 30 March 1834 when the couple came to the York church to seal the commitment they had made to each other to live as a married couple.
Now, 190 years on, on Saturday 30 March 2024, the church is celebrating the occasion with a series of Anne Lister-themed events.
From 11am – 3pm at the church, visitors will be able to step back into 1834 and ‘Meet the Parishioners’ – an immersive experience where visitors can chat with people from Anne Lister’s extensive diaries.
Meet her York solicitor, a cabinet maker from Ogleforth and the owner of the Draper’s Shop on College Street, who will be there to share the gossip and tell you all they know about Miss Lister and their lives in York in 1834.
There will also be ‘Tea in the Pews’ – Anne Lister and Ann Walker celebrated their one year anniversary of ‘being together so comfortably and so happily’ with plum pudding. The church will be offering tea, coffee, plum cake with clotted cream and jam for £7.50 per person.
The day of events will finish with a book launch of Anne Lister’s York Walking Tour by Sarah Cowling. The book will take you step by step through the streets of York and in the footsteps of Anne Lister herself.
Attendees are invited to join Sarah at 3pm at Holy Trinity Church Goodramgate for a glass of something and a bit of chat about Anne Lister, the ‘first modern day lesbian’.
