A York churchyard needs to extend as it is running out of room for future burials.
Heslington Church is a Grade II listed building built in 1858 by JB and W Atkinson.
The churchyard surrounds the church, with the University of York owned Dean’s Acre to the east, field lane to the south, church field to the west and the Church Lane to the North.
But it is almost at capacity.
Planning documents state: “The Parochial Church Council of Heslington Church are proposing to extend the existing church yard boundary by 20 metres into Deans Acre with the agreement of the University of York, to provide much needed space for burials of coffins and ashes for the community.

“The current church yard is almost at capacity for burials, so the Parochial Church Council are hopeful that the proposed church yard extension will provide space for around 100 burials. At current rates this will be sufficient space for at least 50 years.”
The church council expects a burial rate of no more than five internments per year, and approximately ten ashes burials per year.
The new east boundary will be a hawthorn hedge, with a timber gate for grave digger access.
