With 83 sleeps till the big day, York is gearing up for Christmas.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the St Nicholas Fair – and many of the 2022 events centre around the popular Christmas market.
And for the first time, all traders at the fair will offer discounts to residents.
Altogether, 70 chalets will line the streets of Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square from 17 November to 23 December, selling an array of local produce and gifts – from luxury stationery to Yorkshire Pudding beer.
All traders at this year’s St Nicholas Fair will be offering exclusive discounts for York residents when presented with valid proof of address (see below).
Each trader will offer money off, ranging from 10% to 30% discounts. Find out who’s offering what discount here.
Accepted proof of York residency includes:
- a valid York Card
- an identity card that states ‘York’, eg driving licence or older person’s bus pass.
Opening day fun
To mark the 30th anniversary of St Nicholas Fair, the opening day of the market will feature a programme of free events and activities.
From 12pm to 9pm on Thursday 17 November, there will be live entertainment in St Helen’s Square, Parliament Street and Shambles Market to get everybody in the festive spirit.
This will include choirs, bands and free theatre workshops. Plus, there’ll even be an opportunity to meet St Nicholas himself at Shambles Market
Sarah Loftus, managing director at Make It York, said: “Christmas in York is always a special time of the year, with this year set to be even more so as we celebrate 30 years of the famous St Nicholas Fair.
“We’re pleased that all of our traders at this year’s St Nicholas Fair will be offering a discount for York residents, plus we’ll be hosting a whole day and evening of free festive entertainment on Thursday 17 November to mark this special milestone for St Nicholas Fair.”
