The York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir are set to bring some seasonal joy to St Helen’s Square next week in a special charity performance.
The York choir will be performing a variety of classic and new Christmas songs in the Square, while fundraising for three York charities.
The York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir will perform at St Helen’s Square, York, on Saturday 7 December at 2pm.
Mike Wash, chairman of the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir, chatted to YorkMix Radio‘s Laura and Leigh to share more about the special festive event.
“Singing in and around York at Christmas time is something we’ve been doing for years,” said Mike. “In fact, the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir have been singing Christmas festive songs since 1925 – next year is our 100 year celebrations.
“So it’s really apt that we’re back in St Helen’s Square after quite a few years absence, and we’re really looking forward to it.”
The audience for the performance can expect to hear a “range of traditional and some less than traditional” Christmas songs, all particularly arranged for a male voice choir.
There will also be a big raffle on the day as well, with all the venues in St Helen’s Square donating raffle prizes to the partnership charities.
The three charities they will be raising money for are Shine21, for families with children who are Downs Syndrome, North Yorkshire Music Therapy Centre which provides music for learning disability and dementia communities, and the men’s mental health charity Menfulness.
“We really appreciate the support of St Helen’s Square,” said Mike. “The businesses around that area are absolutely wonderful.
“We look forward to it being a regular occasion, and maybe next year we’ll bring an even greater massive choir with us.”
The choir will also be hosting a huge charity Centenary Anniversary Concert at York Barbican next September, which will involve six choirs and raise funds for their partnered charities.
If you can’t wait until Saturday to see the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir perform, catch them at their Christmas Traditions concert series at the Citadel, Gillygate, on Tuesday 3 to Friday 6 December. Tickets available here.
