A new cafe is about to open in York – and they’re offering 50% off to the first 50 people through the door!
Shambles Korner, Newgate, will open on Monday (19 February) at 9am.
Opening in the former Henshelwoods Deli building, the new cafe will serve up an Italian-inspired menu with breakfasts, lunch, light bites, and more.
Visitors can expect tasty delights such as Eggs Royale (£10), Spicy Hash (£8), and Maple Pancakes (£10) on the breakfast and brunch menu, plus light bites like Bruschetta (£5) and Calamari (£5). The lunch menu features burgers and sandwiches (from £8), pasta (from £8), and pizza (from £7).
It’s a new venture for two friends Zehan Chowdhury and Makshud Rahman. Zehan is currently the general manager for Heavenly Desserts York, while Makshud is the managing director for the Diamonds Group.
And for the grand opening they’re offering 50% off to the first 50 people.
“We came together to get something new for the Shambles Market, and we found this dynamic place here,” Zehan told YorkMix.
“I wanted to have something of my own to take on as a challenge, and see how it goes,” he said. “Shambles Market is at the heart of the city with millions of people coming to visit. This is the right location to begin our journey – hopefully it goes well!”
The pair have converted the building from a deli to the cafe.
It was previously Henshelwoods Deli, which opened in 1998. It was then taken over by Stephen Dudley in September 2020, who launched a range of posh picnics the following spring. However, the business went into liquidation last July. It was wound up owing £86,645.
The process to opening has been “very hard. Because it’s a listed building we had to spend a good amount of time looking at the building and figuring out the operation and how to set out the kitchen and front of house, which took a few months.”
Zehan and Makshud have felt very supported by the businesses around them. “Everybody has come in talking to us, helping us, giving us information we needed and giving us a welcome.
“It’s been about seven months working on it so I’m really looking forward to opening.”
Shambles Korner will be open 9am to 5pm every day, with the possibility of extended opening times in the summer.
There are 20 covers inside. A delivery service is “on the cards” for the future, and will be on Deliveroo and Just Eat. But right now they will be offering a click and collect and takeout service.
The venue has created between 15 to 20 jobs. They’re also still recruiting – if you’re interested you can drop off your CV at the café or send it to [email protected].
Shambles Korner also have an offer for York residents and Shambles traders – for the first 30 days they will be offering 15% off for both, simply show a proof of address upon ordering.
“I’d like to invite everyone from York, and internationally, to try a new business,” said Zehan. “We hope that everybody wishes us well – this is my first journey so we want everybody’s support.”
