An award winning York brewery has been sold and moved to Wales.
Treboom Brewery operated from Shipton-by-Beningbrough for 11 years.
It was run by John Lewis, who worked as a research scientist before pursuing his dream of producing great beers, and Jane Blackman, a ceramicist who brought her creative side to beer making.
They created a selection of core beers, including the best seller Yorkshire Sparkle. In addition, they brewed a selection of specials – in 2017 Treboom’s French-inspired beer Avant Garde won two stars in the year’s Great Taste Awards.
But now Yorkshire Sparkle and the rest are moving out of Yorkshire.
“Just to let you all know, Jane and John have decided it’s time to have a rest and step back from brewing,” they announced on social media.
“The last 11 years have been fantastic but now it’s time for someone else to continue the Treboom story.
“The new owners are relocating the brewery to North Wales but will be keeping the Treboom name and all the delicious recipes for our award winning beers.”
People thanked the couple for producing such great Yorkshire beers.
Gary Penrose, landlord of the Marcia Inn, Bishopthorpe, said: “Treboom Brewery will be a big loss to the York real ale scene. Had the pleasure of doing business with John & Jane for many a year with Yorkshire Sparkle in particular appearing fairly often on our bar.
“Truly lovely people who I send a personal wish to for good luck in their future.”
Andy Herrington, who founded another great York brewery, Ainsty Ales, said: “You were a good benchmark for me when I founded Ainsty Ales Brewery, thanks for your support John.”
And a Treboom fan said: “So sorry to hear this news, Treboom has produced some fantastic beers, particularly Yorkshire Sparkle, which goes down so well! Christmas won’t be the same without a Yorkshire Sparkle beer box!” said one.
