‘That was incredible. A star is born at the Edinburgh Festival!’
The words of future Radio 1 breakfast show presenter Nick Grimshaw after he had witnessed the astonishing performance of York’s own Sam Jenkyns.
Sam broadcast live on the wireless and internet as part of Radio 1’s Fun and Filth Cabaret, and wowed not only Nick but fellow host Scott Mills and the Edinburgh Fringe crowd.
Introduced by Scott, 17-year-old Sam appeared on the big screen at the Potterrow venue in Edinburgh, and explained: I’m in my bedroom in York, which is down south from where you are.’
He had been invited on after successfully auditioning on Scott’s afternoon show.
So how does Sam describe what he does? ‘I do dubstep beatboxing with impressions mixed in to it.’
Ah! If you’re not sure what that means, watch the video. For his Fun and Filth cabaret, he mixed in the Trailer Guy from all those movie trailers, Optimus Prime from the Transformer films, the Muppets’ Fozzie Bear and Gollum from Lord of the Rings among others.
The crowd loved it. ‘Awesome! Sam, they absolutely loved you!’ said Scott.
Sam is also in the York Mystery Plays. Here he is being brutally stabbed in the cinematic trailer:
