A York bar announced today that it will be closing next month.

But this is a good news story – as the team are plotting a move to a purpose-built venue with a rocking future ahead.

Jimmy’s opened on Low Petergate in April last year. Owners George and Jimmy Craig, who made the charts in their band One Night Only, had already found success with branches of Jimmy’s in Manchester and Liverpool.

They were delighted to bring the rock’n’roll bar concept to their home city. And it has flourished in the last year.

But Jimmy’s York will now close on 12 June.

The reason? The team are taking over at the planned 500-capacity live music venue on Toft Green.

YorkMix reported in January that developers North Star, who are behind the proposed venue on the site of the old Fibbers building, had teamed up with Jimmy’s to make the dream a reality.

In a statement today, George and Jimmy said those plans were now moving quickly.

“Jimmy’s is extremely pleased to announce that we are moving house – to a brand-new music venue on Toft Green, York,” they said.

“We have been working with North Star Developments to design Jimmy’s new home in York city centre – a state-of-the-art 500-capacity live music club night venue which will put York back on the UK touring map to host established and emerging UK and international bands and artists.

“This great news sadly means a fond farewell to our Low Petergate restaurant & music bar in Low Petergate which will be closing with a bang on June 12th, but it means we can fully focus on our core values at the new location: Good Beer, Good Music, Good Times.”

They thanked everyone who had supported the Low Petergate venue, especially the staff “who have worked incredibly hard to make it a special place… you’ll be seeing their faces at our new house!”

Plans for the new development on Toft Green, comprising a ground floor music venue with stage, bar and VIP booths and two floors of offices above – have yet to be approved by City of York Council.

The application has received 15 objections and six supportive statements.

Clearly Jimmy’s is confident that the plans will go ahead, saying: “We look forward to seeing everyone at the new venue – so keep an eye on our socials over the next few months for updates – we can’t wait!”

We have asked George and Jimmy some supplementary questions and will update soon.
