Work has now been completed on a £5 million project to create luxury flats at the site of an historic York home.
We revealed last year that Beverley House and its grounds were being redeveloped into 21 homes.
Originally constructed in the late 19th century, Beverley House became a family residence for the Rowntree’s factory manager. It later served as offices for the Joseph Rowntree Trust and the Local Government Ombudsmen.
The Shipton Road estate was bought from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation by Harrogate developer Inglehurst Property in 2021. Architects Vincent & Partners designed the new development.
Now Dudleys Consulting Engineers has completed works to help transform the grand Victorian villa into apartments.
Dudleys worked closely with the design team to support and internal reconfigurations of Beverley House and helped to deliver three new, one, two and three-storey buildings.
Beverley House history

Built in Victorian times, the 1911 census lists the 12-roomed house as being occupied by Thomas Appleton, general manager at the Cocoa Works, his wife Hannah, a cook and housemaid. It was purchased because it adjoined the Homestead and Ouse Lea.
After the war, it was divided into three flats, each with its own separate entrance. Two additional wings were added to the building by the architect, Richard Fraser, to provide office space for the three Joseph Rowntree Trusts in addition to a shared boardroom, library and office machine room.
The building was leased to the Local Government Ombudsmen in 1990.

Managing director at Dudleys Consulting Engineers Andy Walker said: “We were pleased to work with the team to help regenerate this important site in York.
“Now known as Beverly Court, the new development blends important historical relevance with a highly modern specification to create 21 unique, luxury apartments in a city with great demand.

“The site wasn’t without its challenges due to preservation, new build configuration and flood mitigation requirements, but our expert team was able deliver innovative solutions including the installation of sustainable drainage systems.”
Dudleys is no stranger to York and its topography having already delivered considerable expertise for projects including the redevelopment of the former Gas Works site at Heworth Green and also the redevelopment of the 29,000 sq ft landmark office building now occupied by Malmaison in the city centre.
