Woman dies in the sea off North Yorkshire beach despite ‘amazing efforts’ to save her
A woman has died while swimming in the sea at a popular North Yorkshire beach.
The woman, aged in her 60s, died at Runswick Bay.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “The woman, who was visiting from outside the area, died while swimming in the sea.

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and the woman’s family are being supported by officers.
“Thank you to everyone at the scene who assisted officers, the Coast Guard and Ambulance service.”
The incident happened on Friday (13 August). According to witnesses, an off duty doctor joined the attempts to save the woman.
Marie Clayton was on the beach at the time. She posted: “We witnessed the tragic events today and were totally amazed at how much effort went into trying to save one life.
“You were all truly amazing. I hope all those involved are OK and the family of this lady have the love and support they need to get them through this time.”
Claire Thornton agreed. “We were also on the beach, felt so helpless but also was amazed at the efforts the medics, lifeguards and everyone else put in to doing everything they possibly could for the poor lady, they were amazing. Our thoughts are with the lady’s family tonight.”
