After the magnificence of Sir Tom Jones managed to wipe out the betting disaster that was the first day of the Knavesmire’s music weekend, YorkMix tipster Dick Turpin is back on his horse with his selections for this afternoon.

Just one winner yesterday, and too many near-miss hard luck stories.

Saturday provides a seven-race card with the fascinating Sky Bet Dash (3.30) as the centrepiece. The six-furlong sprint handicap should see Tanzeel, Kimbrella and Bogart in a close finish, with Turpin’s preference for the likely outsider of that trio.

Bogart’s close third to Kimbrella over five furlongs here a fortnight ago, suggested that an extra furlong might just be enough.

He is the win selection, but the likely SP, possibly 10-1, should represent excellent each-way value too. Alejandro (2.20) bids to take this 7f event for the second year, and with a 4lb advantage compared to 12 months ago.

We’re back at Knavesmire again with an intriguing evening of racing to be topped off with a rare performance by Sir Tom Jones.

YorkMix tipster Turpin is used to having doubts at the racecourse; it’s not unusual. That’s the default position for a tipster.

But the big doubt today seems to be whether the old Welsh crooner will make it to the stage, having scrapped a couple of gigs last week due to illness.

But we are told that Tom’s upper respiratory tract infection has improved and we can expect to be joining in with him for hearty choruses of Delilah as the sun starts to set tonight. Fingers crossed.

As for the racing, it looks like a strong night for favourite backers.

Turpin’s contacts report strong stable support for the unraced Mohab (7.00) from the Ryan yard. They have a good record of introducing smart newcomers here and any market move is to be noted.

Crystal Zvedza is a confident nap in the 7.30 race. A bold showing is promised, after impressing in the Oaks.

She pulled too hard that day, and is clearly a cut above. The fitting of a hood is expected to calm her down enough to do the trick tonight.

Turpin’s next best, Hakka (8.00) looks to have crept under the handicapper’s radar and may be around 7lb better than his current mark suggests. Intiwin looks a good choice for the forecast.
