After the exertions of Dante day on Thursday (May 14), YorkMix tipster Dick Turpin had just enough energy left to tell us that Friday is set to be John Gosden’s day.
The old highwayman whispered: “Romsdal is sure to give Brown Panther a run for his money in the Yorkshire Cup (3.15).
“And his Sperry and Yasmeen have an excellent opportunity to finish in that order in the fillies race (3.45).”

It’s Dante day! The renewal of the 1m 2f contest is a mouthwatering affair, bringing the first three favourites in the Derby betting together just 23 days ahead of the Epsom classic.
After welcoming a regal guest among the crowds yesterday, big crowds are expected again. And our tipster Turpin will be among them…
Turpin marks your card
Frankie Dettori partners Jack Hobbs for John Gosden. Already installed as Derby favourite, the Halling colt impressed mightily first time out this season with an emphatic 12-length Sandown win.
The field of nine that day included Rotherwick and the highly-regarded Stravagante. But today’s competition is of a different order altogether, with Turpin’s fancy, Elm Park having the strongest claim.
Once Andrew Balding’s Phoenix Reach colt got the hang of the game (third on his first visit to a racecourse last season) he couldn’t stop winning. Turpin fully expects him to add to last season’s four consecutive victories with a close-fought contest on Knavesmire.
The clear danger is John F Kennedy, Aidan O’Brien’s Galileo colt, currently 8/1 for the Epsom challenge, and likely third favourite here in York.
Golden Horn, John Gosden’s other charge, and Ol’ Man River, O’Brien’s second string, could easily upset the expected outcome if the race is run to suit.
Dettori and Atzeni (on Elm Park) are unlikely to let the pace drop to allow such a shock, and Turpin fully expects them to be battling it out nip-and-tuck right up to the line.
Though the Dante (3.15pm) dominates the day, Turpin has had a strong word for Secret Gesture in the second race (2.40pm). Andrea Atzeni is aboard the Galileo mare.
Turpin expects the longest trip of the day (from Ralph Beckett’s yard in Andover, Hampshire) to have been worthwhile.
At the end of the day (5.20pm), Sir Mark Prescott’s Moscato is Turpin’s solid selection for the two-mile handicap.

Hooray! It’s the Dante meeting, all set to blow this chilly spring weather away with a dazzling first-day card.
Are we going to see this year’s Derby winner in tomorrow’s feature race? Turpin thinks it’s more than likely this year… but let him first turn his tricorn hat to the racecard for today.
Here’s what YorkMix tipster Dick Turpin told us in a hastily scribbled note.
Turpin marks your card
We’re in for a treat on Wednesday, dear York Mixers, as five of these seven races offer brilliantly competitive line-ups.
My stable spies at Andrew Balding’s yard are full of hope for this meeting, not least for tomorrow’s feature race of the week.
But they expect to get off to a flying start today with the lightly-raced Field Of Flame, at the main expense of likely favourite Mahsoob.
The Duke Of York Clipper Logistic Stakes (3.15) offers one of racing’s most thrilling sprints.
So don’t linger too long in the bar, as this six-furlong highlight is a real blink-and-you’ll-miss-it affair.
Turpin is optimistic for the chances of William Haggas’s highly-rated Muthmir, though Marco Botti has been telling the world that his Naadirr, an impressive Oasis Dream colt, is the one to be on.
He may have a point, as Naadirr has already racked up an eye-catching win on the first day of the season at Doncaster, coming from last to first to beat Astaire, who reappears here, and may even end up favourite.
Do those bookies know something Turpin doesn’t? As if!
If Muthmir has trained on, then the spoils are his – and that’s where my ill-gotten gains will be – and he bears the burden of being my nap selection.
Even the small field races (3.45 and 4.50) offer intrigue today, and I expect to see a very bold showing from Frankie Dettori (Star Of Seville and Dheban) in both of those.
Expect to see me tumbling out of Brigantes in Micklegate mid-evening with my trousers still bursting with the bookies’ lolly; then it’s on to Goodramgate and The Habit for a late-night sing song to celebrate.
