Today’s principal race offers punters a challenging conundrum, writes tipster Turpin.

The Pavers Foundation Catherine Memorial Sprint (3.35), run in memory of our city’s inspirational shoe retailer, Cathy Paver, who died last year, is one of Britain’s richest sprint handicaps for three-year-olds.

After seven losing runs, Andrew Balding’s Foxtrot Lady finally got the hang of it and is now looking for her third consecutive win.

But this likely favourite, with a helpful 5lb pull from young jockey Jason Watson, could be vulnerable to Richard Fahey’s useful Gabrial The Saint, and Nigel Tinkler’s promising colt, Citron Major.

The latter, with respected youngster Rowan Scott on board, and his helpful 3lb claim, is a tentative choice in this intriguing six-furlong event.

There’s also plenty of money flowing to an excellent cause. Saturday is Macmillan Charity Raceday, which has raised £7.5 million for the charity over 48 years.

But back to today – and who to back? Over to Turpin, our resident tipster.

Today’s big race, the Ganton Stakes (4.05), attracts just five runners competing for the £28,355 prize, writes tipster Turpin.

The seven-furlong Listed event should see David Simcock’s much-fancied Arod battling it out in the final 200 yards with Andrew Balding’s Here Comes When.

Preference, but only just, is for the latter, winner of Goodwood’s Sussex Stakes last year. The only doubt being that the gelding would prefer softer going.

A high-class field of eight will contest the Ebf Breeders’ Series Fillies Handicap (4.40), with both Sandra’s Secret and Maid In India aiming for a hat-trick of wins.

Sandra’s Secret has the tougher task, being penalised for neat victories at Ripon, but with the reliable Silvestre De Sousa aboard, the grey mare earns the vote.

By far the most exciting betting race of the day is the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Handicap (3.30) with a field of 20 battling it out over the testing seven furlongs.

A case could be made for at least eight of these, with Magic City, Juanito Chico, The Great Wall and Hajjam heading up most lists.

But I have had a strong word from the Easterby yard that everything will be just right for Imperial State, and with Harrison Shaw’s 5lb claim, that makes the five-year-old gelding the one to carry Turpin’s hopes home.
