It’s only flaming June, and the two-day meeting at York Racecourse looks set to be a scorcher whatever the weather.

Building on 45 years of popularity with racing fans and with over £6 million already raised for good causes, Macmillan Charity Day returns on Saturday (June 13).

And both days see top quality racing. So: who’s going to win… Over to YorkMix tipster Dick Turpin…

Turpin’s tips

Several fascinating contests on Saturday (June 13), but the one that catches Turpin’s eye is the Charity Sprint Handicap (3.45).

Scalzo is going for a three-timer, and though he is likely to be favourite after his stunning recent run at Haydock, thrashing the field by seven lengths, many believe that the handicapper has pegged him back with a huge 18lb rise in the weights.

This scepticism should help keep his price at a beneficial level for Turpin’s cash.

My stable spies tell me with confidence that this is a group horse in the making, and would have been capable of carrying even a two-stone rise!

Twilight Son, Roosey and Magical Memory will all come into the reckoning too, but Scalzo represents true class – and, in the safe hands of Paul Hanagan, I fully expect to be collecting wads of cash at around 3.50pm.

Another strong pointer: Next week’s Royal Ascot meeting would seem to have been the natural next stop for this promising colt. But canny trainer Martyn Meade brings him to Knavesmire instead.

It’s a sign, surely – and Turpin, for one, will be heeding it!

Earlier, Withernsea is improving with every oputing and will be carrying this highwayman’s hopes in the 7-furlong JCB Handicap (2.35).

It’s a wide open race, with claims to be made for Free Code and So Beloved too. Not forgetting the doughty Alfred Hutchinson who can always spring a surprise.

Turpin marks your card

Dick Turpin can’t promise he’ll select a horse to place in every race on Friday (June 12) at Knavesmire. But that’s exactly what he managed on the final day of the last meeting.

So, he’s been understandably busy since then, spending his winnings at various hostelries around the city. He dropped by the YorkMix office at the top of Shamble, just long enough to sing the praises of Regal Dan, going for glory for the O’Meara team in the big handicap (3.40).

Sam James is expected to prevail in the 7-furlong contest and is just preferred to the likely favourite Mehdi.

Turpin’s big money will be saved, though, for Jason Hart’s ride, Ridge Ranger, in the next race (4.10). It’s another high-quality sprint, this time on the straight 6-furlong track.

He confidently expects the four-year-old to triumph over his mainly older rivals, at the main expense of Willbeme and Gran Canaria Queen.
