It’s John Smith’s day at Knavesmire, and our trusty tipster Dick Turpin is hoping to match or exceed his three-winner haul of yesterday.
You’ll need nerves of steel to bet big on today’s spectacular John Smith’s Diamond Jubilee Cup (3.50), writes Turpin.
The ten-furlong feature handicap race is always one of the season’s most competitive races, and with 22 declared runners, this year’s renewal looks even tougher than usual. Stylehunter, Mountain Angel, Jazeel and Scarlet Dragon all have strong claims.
But I’m siding with top-weighted Afaak. Dane O’Neill’s five-year-old charge may be shouldering a 5lb penalty for victory at Ascot last month, but that win, by a nose, was in soft ground; today’s good to firm will suit this son of Oasis Dream much better. He may be the nap selection, but caution is advised.
I won’t be so restrained in supporting Mancini in the Stayer’s handicap (4.25). His seventh at Ascot recently is deceptive. That two-and-a-half mile trip was asking too much. This two-mile event looks tailor-made to get the best out of this gutsy five-year-old.
I’ve had a strong whisper for Gold Mount in the John Smith’s Silver Cup (2.40). His 16-1 win here (on soft ground) last month was no fluke, and this 13-furlong event will suit the gelding perfectly. John Gosden’s Weekender is the obvious danger, with Sea The Lion representing good each-way value.

We can’t promise that YorkMix tipster Dick Turpin will match his performance of a fortnight ago when he guided us to four winners at Knavesmire.
The old rogue has been hiding out in the Forest of Galtres since then, claiming that a few of the racing world’s on-course bookies are trying to silence him. This missive arrived overnight by pigeon post:
As long as the worst of the rain holds off today, I’m confident we can cane the bookies once more, writes Turpin.
The feature race, The Group 3 William Hill Summer Stakes (3.15), has attracted a classy field of fillies, headed by Shades of Blue, Perfection, Foxtrot Lady and Archer’s Dream. Preference is for the latter, as James Fanshawe’s progressive three-year-old continues to impress after three unbeaten outings this term.
Her dead heat in a listed six-furlong contest at Salisbury last month confirmed the ability shown at Doncaster and Yarmouth over the same distance.
Likeable jockey George Wood has developed a tremendous understanding with this granddaughter of Acclamation – and bigger things are predicted for my nap of the day.
I like to find value in my suggestions for you, but sometimes it is simply impossible to look beyond the likely favourites.
That’s the case for the first two races today where Spartan Fighter looks to have everything going his way in the opener (2.05), and likewise for Anythingtoday in the second race (2.40), a handicap just a few yards short of a mile and a half.
A more competitive event, the 30 Year Curzon Club York Anniversary Handicap (3.45) is much harder to fathom. Likely favourite Mr Coco Bean is aiming for a hat-trick of wins, but I fear this may be a much tougher contest than last week’s Haydock victory and, with a penalty, he is worth opposing.
Archie Perkins appeals most after nice wins at Beverley and Redcar. I believe his recent third when beaten favourite at Beverley can be disregarded as he was hampered and lost momentum in running. Though he’s a Win selection, he may still be value for money as an each-way proposition (perhaps 7/1 or longer).
