Beautiful sunshine, brilliant racing – and Busted.
That’s the order of the Summer Music Saturday. It sounds like a winning combination, but can you bag a few winners of your own?
Let our tipster Turpin guide you…
At last! Some fine weather and good ground at Knavesmire. Let’s hope for better performances from the fancied horses today, after so many hotpots got bogged down in the mud just a couple of weeks ago, writes Turpin.
The most valuable race of the day, The Sun Racing Handicap (2.45) attracts a classy field of 20 competing for the £31,125 prize.
Mick Easterby’s Quick Look heads the market after an impressive win at Chester over six furlongs in the soft. But it’s hard to see Nathan Evans mount having things all his own way with strong contenders, Lake Vilta, Intisaaab, George Bowen and Great Prospector all with major claims.
But Turpin always likes to find value – and that is represented here in the form of Savalas, eminently backable each way at likely odds of 10-1 or better.
He’s something of a superstar at Kevin Ryan’s Hambleton Hills training centre – and shrewd Kevin, who saw the four-year-old gelding perform creditably for a fourth place here in mid-May clearly believes this son of Zebedee has what it takes and deserves a second chance; and we can disregard the last outing on testing ground.
With Tom Eaves up, if anyone can spring a nice surprise today, it’s Savalas.
The 19-runner Jump Jockeys Nunthorpe Handicap (5.05) looks more competitive than ever, as the top National Hunt riders battle it out over the five-furlong course.
But this is far from a novelty race, and we can expect a big showing from Roman River (Leighton Aspell) and Music Society (Brendan Powell). Preference is for the latter who impressed here a fortnight ago. Now, with cheekpieces fitted, that should keep his mind on the job even more and he’s my banker of the day.
