As predicted, it was almost impossible for anyone to pick a winner on Thursday, Day Two of the Dante Meeting.
The feature race of the day, the Betfred Dante Stakes fell to 33-1 outsider Libertarian, with favourite Indian Chief trailing in third.
Other races saw 12-1, 14-1 and 16-1 winners, with only Dalkala (2-1 fav) in the Middleton Stakes, and Parbold (10-3fav) in the last race providing any respite for rain-lashed punters.
After his elation at scoring a 185-1 tricast on Day One (see below), YorkMix racing insider Dick Turpin was among the thousands who departed Knavesmire with dreams dashed and pockets empty yesterday.
Today, the prospects for punters are much better.
Here are Dick Turpin’s selections for the seven-race card.

Who to back at York Races: Dante Festival 2013, day two
YorkMix tipster Dick Turpin hasn’t been seen in the office for several hours after celebrating his amazing 185-1 Tricast success in the first race of the Dante Meeting.
His selection, First Mohican, trotted up at 3-1; his next best choice was Lahaag, which followed First Mohican home at 9-2; and his Longshot suggestion, Eastern Destiny, filled the third place slot at a whopping 16-1.
The tricast paid a wallet-fattening £186.66 to a £1 stake. At which point Mr Turpin fell off the YorkMix radar. He was seen soon after at the bookie’s pay-out window trousering bagfuls of readies before heading for the stables where loyal mount Black Bess awaited.
He was last seen, riding back to town, aiming for Shaun Collinge’s legendary hostelry, The Maltings, in Tanner’s Moat.
He didn’t stay long enough at the Knavesmire to see his third race selection Liber Nauticus give the bookies another pounding, albeit at modest odds of 4-6.
He also registered success in the fourth race. Though his main selection was unplaced, his next best, Society Rock, finished first at 10-1, with his long-shot, Gordon Lord Byron, finishing a creditable third, at 7-1.
The Dante highwayman did manage to stay conscious long enough to send the following tips back by carrier pigeon to the YorkMix aerie high above Petergate.
Here are his suggestions for Thursday’s racing, a much trickier day to pick a winner, says Dick. So don’t go too mad.
