andy-curry-headshotFresh starts, poetry nights and a York company heading south – Andy Curry looks ahead to theatre life this May

Hello and welcome to the monthly theatre diary from YorkMix. New theatre companies are popping up everywhere in York this month, with both Anonymous Bosh and Theatre Mill emerging blinking into the sunlight announcing their existence.

Bish, bash, Bosh

The fabulously named Anonymous Bosh is the brainchild of actor-director Jamie McKellar (of Redshirts Films fame) and Anna-Siobhan Wilcox (who most recently directed Breathing Corpses in the Theatre Royal Studio).

They’re currently casting for a production of Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter, performing in July. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Theatre in earnest

Theatre Mill also involves the seemingly constantly busy Anna-Siobhan Wilcox and Creative Producer Rebecca Stafford. They’re currently casting for their debut production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Interested parties should contact [email protected] for more details.

Words and whippets

Words

York’s own Henry Raby curates a fabulous night of spoken word and poetry in York Theatre Royal Studio on Saturday, May 25. Words & Whippets Poetry Night showcases spoken word artists from across God’s Own County inclduing Raph Attar, Jim Higo, Genevieve Carver, Lucy Ayrton and Sally Jenkinson – all compered by Henry Raby himself. And for him alone, it’s worth the trip!

One woman show

The utterly wonderful Flanagan Collective are offering another opportunity to see Hannah Davies’ critically acclaimed one-woman show Githa at York Theatre Royal from Tuesday, May 28 to Saturday, June 1. Telling the story of female dramatist KG Sowerby, this is running alongside Northern Broadside’s own production of Sowerby’s Rutherford and Son in the main house, and makes a fantastic accompanying piece.

Moving lips

Six Lips Theatre are breaking out of the city limits to take their new production POE down to the Brighton 2013 Fringe festival. They’ll be taking this celebration of the dark and disturbed author to the seaside from Friday, May 17 to Tuesday, May 28. Not strictly local, but they’ve promised York shows to come!

Busy times! And plenty more to come.

If you want to let me know about anything coming up in June then drop me a line about your event at [email protected].
