This was the first sight that greeted York visitors if they parked at Monk Bar car park on Monday morning. Welcome to our beautiful historic city, everyone…
But after we posted about it, City of York Council said they would tackle the problem – see update below.
The mess reminded us of the observation by former North Yorkshire resident and travel writer Bill Bryson, who once wrote about Liverpool that “they were having a festival of litter when I arrived”.
Bin after bin overflowing. Rubbish strewn about the floor. Everything from drinks bottles to old shoes to crisp packets scattered everywhere. And in this heat, you can imagine the smell…
You could forgive tourists for getting straight back in their car and driving off.

Well done to City of York Council’s waste services team, who got in touch via our Facebook page to say: “Thank you for drawing this to our attention. I have made arrangements for the rubbish to be cleared later today.”
And they did, as witnessed by Gwen Swinburn on Twitter:
@theyorkmix @ZeroWasteYork @CityofYork did all but hand pick at monk bar cad park ! Well done – now old folks

Also on Facebook, Lucy Bellerby wondered if it was connected to all the students moving out.
