The pandemic has hit musicians harder than many.
For York band Veneers, it robbed them of their first gig as headliners. But they plan to bounce back once restrictions ease.
Veneers are an indie band who were created in 2019 whilst the group met in The Fossgate Tap over a pint. “Don’t all bands start in a bar? Seems a good place for it to start anyway,” they told YorkMix.
The band has played gigs in both Leeds and York and were also lined up to perform their first proper headliner at The Fulford Arms. Then Covid-19 hit and this was cancelled.
As live music has been put on pause due to the pandemic, Veneers told us: “It’s been good and bad. We were getting into the rhythm of gigging then everything stopped.
“But it’s given us time to think about recording and actually getting something down that we’re pretty pleased with.”
Livestream shows
Restrictions have also meant that the band hasn’t been able to get together, although Rob Mckenzie, vocalist of the band, has been broadcasting a few livestream acoustic shows.
Rob also took part in the virtual One For The Road festival, which is usually a sellout weekend event at The Fulford Arms. He added “they raised money for Selby foodbank so it was great to be a part of something positive like that.”
The band have also managed to be a part of BBC Introducing York, which they described to be “a real highlight to be part of.”
When restrictions allowed for a brief time, Veneers managed to get out to a studio to record a couple of tracks called ‘Teeth’ and ‘Forget It’ which you can listen to below.
With no official gigs planned as of yet, Veneers added “we’ll be first to the stage when we can. We may have a couple lined up but it’s too soon to say.”
Veneers new single ‘Take Me Back’ is due to be released on the 30th of April and can be listened to on Spotify or Apple Music.
