A garden was ‘totally destroyed’ in a fire said to have been started by youths.
The blaze ripped through the garden at a house off The Wandle, Chapelfields, yesterday evening (Thursday).
One witness told YorkMix: “The lady who lived there died last year.
“Her family have just sold it. Now the garden is totally destroyed. They’re heartbroken.
“It’s been done by kids with a deodorant can and a lighter.”
Another neighbour said: “Why on earth would someone set fire to someone’s garden?
“This is a neighbour’s property over the back of our house.
“Garages full of cars where the fire is. Would have blown the whole street up!”
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said they were called out at 8.26pm: “Fire crews from Acomb and York responded to multiple 999 calls reporting a large bush on fire near to a garage.
“Fire crews used a hose reel to extinguish with the cause being deliberate ignition.”
