Almost every moment of the Queen’s public life was captured on film.
Hers was the first reign of the televised era. Later she would be the star of countless YouTube videos, shot by both media professionals and ordinary people.
And before that, the newsreel companies like British Pathé had been on hand to film her as a princess, through the Coronation and on to her life as our monarch.
Here are just a few videos which capture some of her visits to York and North Yorkshire.

1949 – Princess Elizabeth visits York
It was her last visit to York as Princess Elizabeth, on on July 28, 1949.
Thousands of people lined the streets of the Carr Estate between Beckfield Lane and Carr Lane as she toured some of the houses at what was then a relatively new development.
Earlier in the day, the Royals had also visited a prefab in Regent Street off Lawrence Street, as well as the Minster and Bishopthorpe Palace.

1961 – At a York Minster Royal Wedding
A glittering occasion that many in York will remember. Katharine Worsley is seen driving from Hovingham Hall to the cathedral to marry Prince Edward, Duke of Kent.
And Her Majesty was the star guest at a wedding like no other in the city.

1977 – Silver Jubilee visit to Yorkshire
Nothing of York in here, but the Queen is seen visiting the Great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate during her tour of the UK to mark her Silver Jubilee.
2005 – the Queen at Ascot at York
It was the year Ascot went North. The great royal racing festival relocated to York Racecourse while its southern sister racecourse was being redeveloped. And York was treated to the full pageantry of this meeting, with the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh among the royals to travel down the middle of the course in an open carriage.
2008 – A visit to the Great Yorkshire Show
Here, our own David Dunning in his former role on Press video news accompanies royal devotee Janet as they head to Harrogate to see the Queen. And they get mighty close!
2012 – Distributing Maundy Money at York Minster
The last visit of the Queen to York came in 2012. She arrived through the traditional royal entrance, Micklegate Bar, before making her way to the Minster to distribute the Maundy Money. Our own David Dunning was there in his previous role as a video journalist for the York Press.
