Is this evidence that a ghostly cyclist can now be added to York’s plethora of spooks?
Or is it a canny stunt to draw people’s attention to the city as Halloween excitement begins to build?
Watch the video and judge for yourself!
Shared by Shambles Market on their social media, the CCTV footage shows a riderless bike appear on Shambles seemingly from nowhere, and roll down the street before collapsing onto the cobbles.
They said: “Yesterday, something very strange was spotted on CCTV… and this clip gives us the chills. Theories welcome. Has anyone else noticed peculiar paranormal activity around town?”
We asked the digital team at Make It York who run the Shambles Market social channels more questions about the video, including exactly when it was captured, and who the bike belongs to. We’ve not heard back yet, but will update when we do.
The video has now been viewed more than 33,000 times on X alone.
Paranormal Research York asked: “So, is this ghost heading to York Ghost Merchants to get an early dart on the queues? Or are they shopping for ‘scream cheese,’ ‘boo-berry muffins,’ or just some ‘spectral shades’ to protect their otherworldly eyes from the ethereal sun?”
Happy Hiker pointed out: “No one went to help the ghost. He could have been lying there for long enough, seriously injured.”
Some were sceptical, with one saying: “If it rolled down the middle of the street I’d be impressed. Not impossible to roll it out of the alley way.”
