There were remarkable scenes at a York supermarket today as shoppers intervened to stop an alleged theft.
It happened at the Lidl store in Thanet Road, Acomb at about 2pm this afternoon (Saturday).
Witnesses said that three brazen thieves were trying to get away with a trolley filled with an estimated £500 of goods from the budget retailer.
A confrontation took place in Lidl’s car park, with some store staff and shoppers attempting to stop the alleged perpetrators.
In their haste to escape, they then reversed their car into another car.
York resident Siobhan Arthur was at the supermarket when it happened and shared this video of the incident.
WARNING: strong language
She told YorkMix: “They had a trolley full and all three walked out of the entrance door setting the alarms off.
“We were leaving the shop at the same time and that’s when we realised what they were doing.
“Staff came running out and they quickly got in the car leaving all the stolen goods and reversed straight into a car. Members of the public were also trying to stop them leaving.”
She said two women and a man were involved. The man ran off.
“The two women tried to get away in the car but crashed into another car. Then a member of the public opened the car door and took the key out.
“I didn’t see where the girls went but two police vans came and a police car.”
She has given the police her video and believes one of the alleged perpetrators may have been caught.
We have asked the police for more details, and will update this report when they come back to us.
