‘Be strong, Kyiv. We stand with you.’
Just one of dozens of messages that have been left at York Mansion House, before it hosts a reception for Kyiv City Ballet this evening (Monday).
York Theatre Royal will be hosting a gala performance by Ukraine’s national ballet company tomorrow night.
The company arrives at York Station this evening before heading to the Mansion House welcome. Today, the York BID (Business Improvement District) has decorated the Lord Mayor’s official residence in the blue and yellow of Ukraine, with its national flower, the sunflower, prominent.
The BID also invited people to write messages to welcome Kyiv City Ballet, which were set in hearts and tied to the railings.
Rachel Bean, projects and finance executive at the York BID, said: “We want to give them a really warm welcome when they get here for a reception.

“We got yellow and blue cards with white hearts printed and we’re asking passers by to write a message of love and support to the ballet so that when they arrive here tonight, they can read all the messages and hopefully feel really welcome.
“We’ve had a really great response, with loads of messages.”
