A York road is flooded and closed today (Sunday) after a major water main burst.
Water is cascading down Walmgate and the street is closed to traffic from Dennis Street to Merchantgate.
Pedestrians can still get through with care and most businesses are still open

The burst was so explosive it has scattered rocks and debris down the road.
Fire crews are on hand to pump the water away from buildings.
Many have escaped without any water getting in. But the water is seeping into some Walmgate buildings.
A walkway across the water has been created by placing several wooden pallets across the road.

A Yorkshire Water crew arrived at 12.30pm.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The crew from Acomb and an officer attended a severe flooding on a York street which was believed to be caused by a burst water main.
“Yorkshire Water and highways were requested to attend and crews aided by pumping out water from the area.”
Residents reported low water pressure as a result of the leak.
Walmgate Ale House shared their own video of the flood, with the words: “Please note if you are planning on popping in today these are the conditions outside our front door!!
“Thankfully we’re all dry and are open as usual for Sunday roasts and our fabulous selection of local ales.”
These First York buses are being diverted:
- Service 10 (towards Stamford Bridge): diverted via Piccadilly, Stonebow, Foss Islands Road, then back to normal at Lawrence Street. Services will use the stop on Piccadilly instead of Merchantgate.
- Service U2 (towards University): diverted via Coppergate and Clifford Street. Services will use the stop on Piccadilly instead of Merchantgate.
- Service U1 (towards University): diverted via Stonebow, Foss Islands Road onto the normal route at Lawrence Street.
This is not the first time a big water mains burst has hit Walmgate. Two years ago, and again in 2019, the road was closed for several days after a similar episode.
