A massive crowd gathered outside York Minster at midnight to see in the New Year.
People flowed out of pubs, bars and restaurants to make their way to the ancient cathedral to herald 2024 in the time-honoured fashion.
With seconds left in 2023, the countdown commenced.
Then the New Year was heralded by a huge cheer and the sounds of the Minster bells.
People hugged and wished each other a happy New Year. Some little ones had been allowed to stay up late to see the spectacle.
There was a low-key police presence but there was no trouble among the crowd of well wishers.
Roads had been closed and crash barriers installed to ensure everyone was kept safe.
At one point the bell ringers stopped to wave to the crowds from a window in one of the Minster towers.
Fireworks lit up the York sky, both from close to the Minster Refectory and Museum Gardens.
Happy New Year!
