When climber George Mallory was asked why he wanted to conquer Everest, he famously replied: “Because it’s there.”
A similar sense of adventure could be witnessed at the Station Hotel in Pickering when John Dawes tackled his own Everest – a mountain of sausage rolls.
John, star of the Food And The Beast YouTube channel, took on the challenge at the Station Hotel in Pickering.
“I have got 30 minutes to attempt to take these bad boys down,” John begins, motioning at the pile of Greggs snacks on the table at the popular North Yorkshire hotel.
“It’s going to be the toughest challenge I’ve ever done. If I can get one down a minute, that’s 30 sausage rolls – or 10,000 calories.”
He had a few dips and a glass of water to ease the sausage rolls down.
And although he didn’t make 30, he did munch his way through a creditable 21 Greggs sausage rolls.
“I tell you what, it’s harder than you think!” he admitted.
As it was the first such record attempt, John, 43, from Teesside, is hopeful he has bagged himself a world record. That’s for those lovely officials at Record Setters to confirm.
He celebrated by getting a tattoo of a Greggs sausage roll, and is now asking for suggestions for new record attempts. Go to his Facebook page to share your idea.
Meanwhile the Station Hotel in Pickering is already touting for challengers to John’s title.
“Who thinks they’re good enough to try beat my mate John’s aka The Beast’s record of 21 Greggs sausage rolls?” they asked on their own Facebook page.
“We will pay for them. Can you set a new record? Get in touch if you have what it takes.”
