It is one of the fastest, twistiest, most thrilling rides anywhere – meet Flamingo Land’s Sik roller coaster!
Three years in the making, the £18 million attraction was unveiled today (Saturday, 2 July) at the theme park near Malton.
Sik will hurtle thrill-seekers along at 87 kmph across ten inversions. They will experience five different types of inversion in all – including an enormous 25m loop, a Cobra Roll, a Corkscrew and a dizzying five heart-line rolls!
Flamingo Land has worked with SikSilk, the Scarborough based street wear brand to give the roller coaster a street fashion theme.
Flamingo Land chief executive Gordon Gibb was joined at the unveiling today by the SikSilk founders Barry Gill, Sam Kaye and David Johnston to celebrate the epic collaboration.
Two of the first people to see Sik in action were Ben Fry and Laura Castle, YorkMix Radio‘s breakfast show hosts. And Ben even got to try it!
Before he did, he asked Gordon about the amazing new ride.
“There’s a play on words with the title Sik,” Gordon told Ben. “So hopefully, you’ll be resembling the street fashion – being a very fashionable gentleman yourself – rather than actual vomit!
“The bragging rights from the ride is it’s 87 kilometres an hour and ten inversions, which equals the British record.
“It’s three years in the making, and an £18 million project – it’s the biggest attraction we’ve ever done.
“Sik is a showstopper. We hope that the theme is entirely original and different in merging street fashion with a roller coaster, which to my knowledge has never been done before.
“It’s a great way of showcasing our brand and SikSilk which is very well established local fashion brand as well.”
To launch the coaster, Flamingo Land was today hosting the Sik Party, a music festival featuring top DJ Lily Rivers.
And the public can ride it from noon – if you dare!
