Watch: DJ performs set at one of York’s most historic locations – and has plans for more

York DJ Kornel Kucharski, aka DJ DoubleK, has been performing his sets in slightly unusual places – including outside Clifford’s Tower!

After coming up with the idea of making videos of his DJ sets with a friend, Kornel created his first videoset in a marina in his home town of Myslibórz in Poland.

“After publishing it, I hoped to get at least 100 views – how surprised and happy I was when a week after the publication the view counter showed more than 20,000 views!

“This made me decide that I would record video sets in different places.”

So far, Kornel has made videosets on the Flamborough Cliffs, during a balloon flight in Poland – and now at Clifford’s Tower.

Currently the resident DJ at Kennedy’s Bar and Restaurant, Kornel, 32, moved to York from Poland 12 years ago.

“I’m one of those people who loves festivals and it was attending them that made me want to learn to DJ,” said Kornel.

“Seeing how DJs make people happy through music also made me want to stand on the other side of the console.”

Starting in internet radio, Kornel gained more and more listeners with every broadcast. However, his dream of DJing for an audience came true after a trial at Lucia Restaurant and he was offered the job on the spot – he was the resident DJ at Lucia’s for seven years.

He has also won DJ competitions both in Poland and England, and plays a mix of different music genres in his sets, but mainly house music.

And now Kornel wants to play in more places.

“I have lots of ideas for new videos, but most venues need permission and this is where I run into a wall,” said Kornel.

“A dream location for recording is the Minster tower in York – unfortunately not to be realised as I have already been refused. However, I am not discouraged and we are still trying to find some interesting places that can be shown through music.

“Each video gets a lot of positive comments, which gives me extra energy and motivation to create more.”
