Things to do

Oh yes he is! Berwick is back – with a swashbuckling panto adventure.

York legend Berwick Kaler is back at the Grand Opera House this Christmas following a celebrated run of Old Granny Goose last year.

He will be joined once again by his usual trusty crew of David Leonard, Suzy Cooper, Martin Barrass and AJ Powell for Robinson Crusoe and The Pirates of The River Ouse.

Berwick will write, direct and star and it’s guaranteed to be a hilarious take on the classic story of the sailor from York who finds himself marooned on a desert island – but he’s not alone…

Robinson Crusoe and The Pirates of The River Ouse will be at Grand Opera House York from Saturday 9 December 2023 to Saturday 6 January 2024.

Berwick Kaler, along with co-stars David Leonard, AJ Powell and Martin Barrass, set sail on the River Ouse today (Tuesday) to announce their sea-faring new show with the help of City Cruises.

In traditional Berwick Kaler fashion, not much is known yet in terms of the script or what might happen during the show, but audiences can probably expect plenty of pirates and swashbuckling action – and most importantly, laughter and fun.

“This show is for the family,” said Berwick. “And as far as we’re concerned, they’re our extended family. They’ve been with us for years – it’s unique from anywhere else in the country.

“It’s their pantomime. It isn’t ours – it’s theirs.

“The thing is the laughter. You can’t put a price on fun.”

Laura McMillan, theatre director for the Grand Opera House York, said “We are delighted to welcome Berwick and the wider family back to the Grand Opera House this year for what will certainly be a swashbuckling family adventure.

“The Berwick panto is a York tradition, and we can’t wait to welcome audiences to the theatre!”

Tickets start from £13 and will go on general sale on Friday 24 March from 10am. The box office will be open 10am – 1pm for customers wishing to buy their tickets in person, or buy your tickets online here.
