Watch: Beautiful light show transforms York’s Victorian street into magical wonderland
A theatrical curtain is rising on York Castle Museum’s Victorian street this Christmas as they present a special festive story.
The ‘stage’ is set this year as beautiful large-scale projections will be lighting up Kirkgate – that will ignite magic in all ages.
Inspired by the museum’s collection of toy theatres, watch as colourful animations of Victorian puppets Annie and Tom go on an adventure to bring back the magic of Christmas to Kirkgate.
A Kirkgate Christmas Tale will be at York Castle Museum on selected dates through November 2021 to January 2022.

The projections will be accompanied by merry music and narration to tell the Christmas story.
Kirkgate will also be decorated with its usual festive cheer with Christmas trees, twinkling lights and snow-covered street to create a magically immersive experience.
The Victorian sweet shop will also be open to sell traditional tasty treats – it was unable to open last year due to Covid restrictions.
Fiona Burton, public engagement manager at York Museums Trust, said: “This Christmas we have decided to transform our famous Victorian Street into a magical stage – telling a seasonal story of two children looking for some festive cheer in Victorian York.
“Visitors will be able to stroll through the snow-covered street, peek into the shops and watch beautiful puppet show inspired projections adorn the walls as music plays.
“We hope we have managed to create a truly unique and magical experience that visitors of all ages can enjoy.”
