A York driver is warning other road users about a problem on a main York road today (Friday).
Gemma Croft took the pictures below of a significant depression in the middle of one carriageway on Gillygate on Thursday night.
In a post on Facebook she said: “Avoid Gillygate for the time being.
“Reported to council. They’ve said it looks like a sink hole opening up! We hit it with our car and it caused an almighty thud!”
The divot is on the outbound carriageway, close to the junction with Portland Street.

It has now been cordoned off by the council, blocking the lane. It means traffic has to go around the obstacle, causing delays.
Fortunately it is close to where the road widens into two outbound lanes near the traffic lights, giving more room for manoeuvre.

It would not be the first time a hole had opened up on Gillygate.
A sewer collapse closed the road in 2016. And more sewer repairs were carried out on the street by Yorkshire Water in 2019.
