A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We’re appealing for information and dashcam footage from the start of the incident on Davygate.
“Several vehicles were forced to stop, and one person got out of a car to assist someone on the floor. There were also a number of witnesses around watching the incident.
“At the Shambles Market, there were a number of witnesses who informed the police that there had just been a large fight and the offenders had run off.”
