York could soon have its first pet crematorium.
Plans are in to create the business in a paddock off Windmill Lane, in the Hull Road ward.
An Addfield Pet200 pet cremation machine, big enough to take a Great Dane, would be installed at the site.
“It is anticipated that 2-4 animals would be cremated per day but this could potentially rise to approximately 5-6 per day,” planning documents state.
The Mill Cottage Pet Crematorium would be housed in a brick building on the paddock next to a pond.
“The proposal is to open a pet crematorium for the general public and veterinary businesses,” planning documents state.
“There currently is no such business in York and the surrounding areas. It will provide a caring service for pet owners and support two full time roles and two part time roles.
“Due to the machinery used there will be no smells, no harmful emissions, no noise and due to the building design there will be complete privacy and discretion.”
Environmentally friendly
The location of the pet cemetery
According to the application, the business would offer “a sensitive and environmentally friendly means for the disposal of deceased domestic pets”.
It would provide “a unique single-only pet cremation – meaning you only receive the cremated remains of your pet, not a mixture of many.”
The business is not intended to take larger farm animals.

The standard opening hours would be 8am to 6pm, “although the cremators may occasionally operate outside of these times”.
The deceased pets would come from veterinary practices or private individuals, “who can either bring their pets to the crematorium for a service or have them collected by the crematorium staff”.
“Any cremated remains (ashes) generated from the cremation process would be temporarily stored at the facility in sealed containers, before being distributed to their original pet owners within a week time frame,” the documents say.
