Firefighters were out at York Minster today – but happily there was no fire.
Crews were testing a new aerial ladder, based at Harrogate. It goes 15m higher than the one in York.
Stephen Barlow, of the North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, said that the test followed an incident last week when a man climbed onto the Minster roof.

“It all ended safely because the police brought him down after negotiations.
“We had our equipment here, and wondered if it would reach all the way up there. So while there’s no pressure on, we’re checking if it can do that.”
He was very pleased with the test.
He said the same platform would be used if there was another fire at the Minster – as well as on house fires. Water from another fire engine would be piped up the side of the aerial ladder to give a really powerful spray of water.
