Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn put aside their political differences to send condolences to the family of Katie Rough – as donations flooded in.

At Prime Minister’s Questions the Labour leader began with words of commiseration for the family of Katie, seven, who died in a field behind Alness Drive, Woodthorpe on Monday.

He told a packed House of Commons: “I’m sure the whole House will join in heartfelt condolences to the family and friends following the tragic death of seven-year-old Katie Rough in York earlier this week.

“I think it’s right we send condolences to her family.”

The Prime Minister agreed. Mrs May said:

I also join the Right Honourable Gentleman in expressing condolences to the family and friends of little Katie, who died so tragically.

York detectives were scouring the field where Katie was found using metal detectors today.

A 15-year-old girl has been remanded into secure accommodation charged with Katie’s murder.

Meanwhile a crowdfunding campaign for Katie’s family quickly surpassed its original £2,500 target.

The donations started pouring in as soon as it was put live by Heworth woman Maggie Jackson. By 7.00am on Thursday the total had topped £8.6K.

Maggie wrote:

The awful death of Katie, the little 7 year old girl in York, has really saddened me, I can’t stop thinking about what her mum and family will be going through.

It has shocked the whole of York. I don’t know if it’s too early to say this but I’d like to raise money to give to her family to help them through this terrible time without any other worries.

Katie’s family took to the site to offer their thanks.

Just want to say on behalf of me and my family it hugely appreciated and we can not thank all enough for being so kind and supporting towards us!

And a huge thank you to Maggie Jackson for starting this amazing idea
