Armed police cordoned off a York road after the public reported that people were fighting with knives.

Officers carrying automatic weapons were called to Elmfield Avenue to reports of an assault shortly after 4pm.

The road was closed from its junction with Monkton Avenue down to the junction with Thorn Nook.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said at 5pm on Monday (June 12):

Police are at the scene of a report of an assault on Elmfield Avenue in York.

Officers are making enquiries in the area.

Neighbours said they had heard people were “waving knives”. Side roads, including Healey Grove and Foston Road were also closed off.

Several police cars and vans were at the scene for more than an hour. First York bus services due to travel down Elmfield Avenue had to be diverted during the blockade.

The road was reopened at about 5.30pm. No one was arrested at the scene, but a man was later arrested at York Hospital.

Police are still searching for other people thought to be involved.
