Happy birthday to YorkMix Radio!

That’s right, it’s been one whole year since the launch of YorkMix Radio and wow – what a year it’s been.

From the biggest events of the year such as Yorkshire Balloon Fiesta, to the very first YorkMix Hero Awards and YorkMix Family Raceday, to community appeals and charity fundraising, YorkMix Radio has become part of the heart of York and North Yorkshire.

Not to mention all this happening at the same time as a certain pandemic…

“A year ago today the government announced the third lockdown,” said David Green, YorkMix Radio managing director.

“It seemed like the wrong day to be launching a new business but a year on and we’re incredibly proud to see how important YorkMix Radio has become in the lives of our listeners and advertisers.”

Throwback to the launch

The station launched at 6:30am on 4 January 2021 – the first song played was Chasing Rainbows by Shed Seven.

Since the, the radio has had over one million streaming connections, with many more people listening through a DAB radio, at home, at work and in the car.

As well as entertaining listeners across the county, YorkMix presenters have introduced McFly to thousands of people at York Races and teamed up with Asda for the Christmas Toy Appeal.

The radio station joined with the website to create the YorkMix Hero Awards, which celebrated those who had gone above and beyond in York and North Yorkshire during the pandemic.

“We’re here because we think local news, information and entertainment is important; the irony being that many broadcasters deserted ‘local’ at the time when it became more important than ever,” said David.

To celebrate YorkMix Radio’s first birthday, the January Mix It Up prize fund stands at a whopping £1,000 – find out how you could be in with a chance of winning the jackpot here.

“We look forward to continuing to play our part as a community asset for York and North Yorkshire for many years to come,” said David.

“We would like to thank every single person who has listened to us in the last year, you are the reason we’re here!”

We want to extend our endless gratitude to everyone who has tuned in to or supported YorkMix Radio over the past 12 months, as well as the team behind the radio who have worked so tirelessly and commendably.

Here’s to another fantastic year.

A year of memories…
