They sang, they danced, they cheered… These were the joyful scenes as Rick Astley rocked the races in York last night (Friday).
It was a first for both performer and venue. This was the pop legend’s first live gig since the pandemic began, and the first music showcase concert on Knavesmire for two years.
Introduced by Ben Fry and Laura Castle from YorkMix Radio, Rick told the crowds how delighted he was to be back – never realising how long he’d be forced to give up gigging last March.
Mixing his own music with the occasional cover, and slower tunes with absolute bangers, Rick wowed the crowds.
“Brilliant set tonight Rick at York Racecourse,” said Johnny Collaro on Twitter. “You have have a great band and you’re quite hip, also loved the humour. I’d recommend you you to anyone.”
And Tallydoodle said: “I’ve not danced that much or sang my heart out like I have tonight for a long time! Rick Astley, you’ve blown away the pandemic blues can’t thank you enough!”
Naturally Rick finished by leading the crowd in a singalong version of Never Gonna Give You Up.
Today (Saturday) around 30,000 people are expected at York Racecourse for a full day’s racing followed by a concert by McFly.
Top music photographer Marc McGarraghy of Mustang Photography was there to capture the Rick Astley concert in this series of stunning photographs.
