York turned out in force today to be a part of the Remembrance Sunday commemorations.
The parade in honour of those who fought for our country began at Clifford’s Tower and marched through the centre of York.
This included members of 2 Signal Regiment (based in York), the 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment (based across Yorkshire), The Queen’s Own Yeomanry (based in York and Newcastle), and the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery (based in Topcliffe, Thirsk).
Veterans joined the serving members of the armed forces at York City War Memorial in the War Memorial Gardens on Leeman Road.
The large crowd who had gathered for the ceremony filled the park and were several rows deep outside the gates and by the fence next to the riverside path.
Wreaths of poppies were laid at the memorial, led by the Lord Mayor of York Cllr David Carr and the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire Jo Ropner. The Last Post was sounded.
Two Light Guns were positioned next to the gardens overlooking the Ouse. One was fired at 11am to mark the start of two minutes’ silence. Another was fired to mark the completion of the silence.
