** The disruption is now over and trains are running normally **
A vehicle hit a bridge in York this afternoon (Thursday), which closed the road and also affected rail services through the city.
Rail problems were then exacerbated by a points failure between York and Darlington. And a train also hit an obstruction between York and Thirsk.
It has resulted in lots of cancellations and delays.
Few details have been released about the vehicle crash, although it appears to have been at the Leeman Road rail bridge at about 3.30pm.
Leeman Road was blocked until 5.30pm.
When a vehicle hits a rail bridge, the bridge needs to be examined by Network Rail to make sure it’s safe and any debris needs to be cleared.
The rail line reopened shortly after 4pm. But then the points failure north of York blocked all lines.
This too has now been fixed. National Rail is predicting service disruptions until 7pm.
