Two people were taken to hospital after a car and van collided on the A64 this afternoon (Friday).

The accident happened just before 2.30pm at the junction of Towthorpe Moor Lane and Stockton on the Forest.

After the vehicles collided, the car caught fire.

Members of the public pulled the occupants from the wreckage.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokeswoman said: “We received an emergency call at 2.24pm this afternoon to reports of a two-vehicle collision on the A64 at Towthorpe.

“We dispatched two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, the air ambulance, a manager and clinical supervisor to the scene.

“Two patients were conveyed to Leeds General Infirmary by land ambulance.”

Fire crews extinguished the fire and made the scene safe.

Police closed the A64 in both directions, as far as the Hopgrove roundabout.
