They were responding to a fire in a freezer unit.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews extinguished the fire and isolated the power to the freezer unit.
“The fire was caused by an electrical fault.”
One shopper told YorkMix: “I spoke to some of the people that are waiting and they said that the fire alarm went off and the fire crews went in to evacuate.
“One person said they saw someone with a fire extinguisher. If it is a fire, it can’t be a big one.”
Another witness told YorkMix: “I was walking past one of the freezers when it was smoking.
“The staff tried to put it out with an extinguisher but ended up sounding the fire alarm.”
The fire engines left the scene before 9pm and the store reopened.
