One person has died after being struck by a train near York this afternoon (Wednesday).
A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the line near York at 1.14pm today following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended. However, sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
The incident is believed to have happened in the Copmanthorpe area.
All lines were shut for a while as emergency services responded to the incident. The air ambulance was at the scene too.
It left many services at a standstill at York station. By 4pm, lines had reopened, but there were still long delays.
Trains to and from Selby, Thirsk and Northallerton were also affected.
Many trains to and from London, Leeds, Manchester, Hull, Liverpool, Plymouth, Birmingham and Scotland were either cancelled or delayed.
The train operators affected were CrossCounty, Grand Central, Hull Trains, LNER, Northern, TransPennine Express.
Customers were advised to travel via Harrogate if travelling between York and Leeds.
Rail replacement transport were requested to run from York to Leeds and Selby.
Coaches were scheduled to travel between Doncaster and York too.
A spokesperson for Network Rail told YorkMix: “We’re supporting the emergency services in responding to an incident just outside of York.
“We’re sorry for the impact this is having on train services between York and Doncaster. Please check with National Rail Enquiries or your train operator for the latest updates and details on ticket acceptance.”
