A man was pulled from the river last night, leading to a police investigation.
Overnight and this morning, part of the riverside was cordoned off.
Police tape closed off the path next to the Lowther pub on Cumberland Street. The cordon extended down to the bottom of Lower Friargate.
A police guard was on the scene. The cordon was lifted at around midday.
Witnesses told YorkMix that police were called last night after a man entered the water and was pulled out by members of the public.
Much later, at about 3.30am riverside residents heard a helicopter overhead.
North Yorkshire Police said they received a report from the ambulance service that a man had been pulled from the River Ouse in York by members of the public at about 9.30pm.

A force spokesperson said: “He was taken to hospital for treatment.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish how he came to be in the river, although at this time there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”
A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call around 9.15pm last night (11 January) to reports of a male in the river near King’s Staith, York.
“An ambulance was dispatched to the scene and the patient was conveyed to York Hospital.”
